Automated Backups on Windows
Posted Mar 23, 05:13 am in Tips & Tricks
We’re still on the lookout for a clean, simple solution to automated, scheduled backups for Windows users, much like the Transmit, Automator and iCal solution for Mac users.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say this solution is perfect, but it’s certainly the best we’ve found so far, courtesy of Dustin Mihalik in our forums.
The solution involves SyncBack, a free application for performing scheduled, synchronising backups over FTP. Unfortunately we only support SFTP, so Dustin cleverly employed BitVise Tunnelier’s FTP Bridge software to tunnel SyncBack’s FTP communication through an SFTP connection. Brilliant!
You can read all about Dustin’s solution over on his weblog, and while you’re there, you can check out his previous not-as-simple-but-still-works backup solution using WinSCP, Pageant and PuttyGen.
All of these solutions (including the Transmit solution for Mac users) are pretty geeky, and involve a few more steps than we’d like, so we’re still working on ways to make all this easier.
In the meantime, these will pretty much take care of themselves after you get them set-up and running.
